Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA)

Course Overview

This replaces the old A1 course and is intended for individuals that need to carry out assessments in the classroom or work environment. It consists of two classroom days and a third day where your tutor will observe you in your current assessing role.

Candidates are awarded a nationally accredited qualification by its conclusion. Enabling assessments to be carried out on site, within colleges and on NVQ programmes.

Course Modules

The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement is divided into three modules:

  1. Understanding the principles and practices of assessment
  2. Assess occupational competence in the work environment
  3. Assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding

Successful completion of the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement will enable you to:

  • Understand the principles and requirements of assessment
  • Understand different types of assessment method
  • Understand how to plan assessment
  • Understand how to involve learners and others in assessment
  • Understand how to make assessment decisions
  • Understand quality assurance of the assessment process
  • Understand how to manage information relating to assessment
  • Understand the legal and good practice requirements in relation to assessment
  • Plan the assessment of occupational competence
  • Make assessment decisions about occupational competence
  • Provide required information following the assessment of occupational competence
  • Maintain legal and good practice requirements when assessing occupational competence
  • Prepare assessments of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding
  • Carry out assessments of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding
  • Provide required information following the assessment of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding
  • Maintain legal and good practice requirements when Assessing vocational skills, knowledge and understanding.
How is this Course assessed

This qualification is assessed by:

  • workbooks & portfolio of evidence
  • Observation and assessment of eight candidate sessions (two assessments of two learner’s occupational competence, plus at least two of two learner’s skills, knowledge and understanding).

Should your essay be deemed as not having met the minimum standards, you may use the feedback provided by your tutor to assist in your resubmission. There are no limits set for resubmissions, although most pass on a second attempt.

Course Duration

This course includes the following learning methods:

Classroom training over 3 days (with assignments to be completed at your own pace)

Virtual learning over 3 days (with assignments to be completed at your own pace)

Self-study of approximately 84 hours (to be completed at your own pace)

Time allowed to complete may vary, according to your current levels of knowledge and experience, as well as other commitments you may have, but can generally be completed in 84 hours.

Upon completing this course successfully, you will be awarded the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA)
Prerequisite

Trainee assessors MUST have access and be able to assess at least two learners in the workplace. It is the trainee assessor’s responsibility to find their own learners.

Course Resources

A course induction session is offered to each candidate, along with ongoing access to an assigned tutor via phone, email, or within study groups.

The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement content is available online, free of charge, from any device with an internet connection.

Course PowerPoint presentations, a personalised study plan, notes and handouts are included for a year 24 hours every day.
